YOU and Your Schoolchild

Review
by Prof. Mila Nardelli
"You and Your Schoolchild," the book by Maria Teresa De Donato, co-written with co-author Horst Költze, is a publication rich in content, with a smooth and pleasant text to read, a critical analysis of the reform policies that in these years have radically transformed public schools, unfortunately leading them to decline rather than progress, because economic motivations often supported them and which had consequences on various levels, determining an objective limit to freedom of teaching, imposing specific teaching methodologies as the only model capable of achieving particular objectives, often and even radically changing the aims of public schools, essentially making them a reservoir in which the training process responds to the economic needs of a production process.
The authors highlight how these transformations have led to a
devaluation of other, perhaps more decisive, objectives that the school must
pursue: the cultural and civil emancipation of pupils, who should become aware
citizens in a climate characterized by the pluralism of proposals. Instead,
standardized and completely level performances, statistics, and tests are often
used, which prevent them from expressing their talents and identifying and
realizing their human potential.
The purpose of this book is to inform to change the school for
the better so that it returns to being at the service of students, families,
and the community and so that pedagogy and anthropology indicate the path to
follow for teachers and so that parents can be the first to support and help
children, without delegating this role exclusively to the school.
I recommend this book to students, teachers, managers, parents,
and anyone who cares about children's future. Failing schools damage the
community, and children are society's future.
