Since 1940 Els landscape
(Makiïvka 30 March 1917 - Tallinn June 14, 1995)
Member of the Union of Estonian Composers since 1945. Els Aarne graduated from the Tallinn State Conservatory in three specialties: musical pedagogy in the Gustav Enesaks class (1939), piano in the class of Theodor Lemba (1942), and composition under Heino Eller (1946).
He worked as a piano teacher and pedagogue of musical theory subjects at the seminar for teachers of Tallinn (1939–1945), at the State Conservatory of Tallinn (1944–1974), and at the Tallinn music school for a shorter period.
Among the works of Aarne, there are two symphonies, several instrumental concerts (including three concerts for cello), about ten cycles of solo songs on texts of Estonian poets, instrumental chamber music, a wide range of choral songs and songs for children, and music for wind orchestra. As a solo instrument, Aarne also chose the double bass, usually little used (concert for double bass (1968), Sonata per double bass (1976)) and the French horn (Concertino (1958), Meditation (1970) and Dialogue (1972), also an opening piece (1963) for nine horns). In his works, you can find the use of popular Estonian melodies or specific ways, but also new expressive means such as free dodecaphony. The subjects of his vocal works are different: work, homeland, nature, humor, and human relationships. With his music, the state of mind reflected by the text, even by a single word, thinly illustrates.
Els Aarne's musical activity was quite vast. His specific school books have contributed to the teaching of solfeggio. The problems of musical theory have been treated in the research "Methods in the popular people of Estonian" (1973, manuscript). Aarne performed as a concert pianist and ensemble player and was active as a musical critic for the cultural weekly "Sirp Ja Vasar," she made radio broadcasts of Estonian interpreters and composers. Her short film Azalea was awarded the all union competition for amateur films; she was also awarded to photographic competitions.
Muzyka, Sovetskii Kompozitor, Estonian State Department of the USSR Music Fund, Eesti Raamat, Eesti Riiklik Kirjastus, and others published Aarne's works.
