Barbie Autistica e Autismo - Intervista a Maria Teresa De Donato - di Elisa Rubini

Barbie Autistica e Autismo:

·        Il fatto che finalmente fosse stata realizzata una Barbie autistica, ossia un personaggio femminile;

·        il colore della pelle di questa Barbie, che ‘fortunatamente’ – a suo dire – non è bianca, ma piuttosto, sembrerebbe rappresentare una ‘Native American”, o comunque una donna dell’America latina;

Maria Teresa De Donatos Perspektive

·        die Tatsache, dass endlich eine autistische Barbie, eine weibliche Figur, geschaffen wurde;

·        die Hautfarbe dieser Barbie, die – wie sie sagte – „glücklicherweise“ nicht weiß ist, sondern eher eine indigene oder zumindest lateinamerikanische Frau darstellt;

“Ocean of Senses” by Maria Teresa De Donato: The perfect novel for summer reading

“Ocean of Senses” by Maria Teresa De Donato:
The perfect novel for summer reading

by Elisa Rubini

“Ocean of Senses” by Maria Teresa De Donato is the perfect read for those who love summer romances but aren't looking for the usual lighthearted story—the kind you forget the moment you close the book. Here, emotion is not a game; it is not merely attraction or a romantic interlude inserted to dress up the plot. It is something born of a life truly lived—of deep memories, wounds, changes, and desires that resurface just when it seemed too late.

The protagonist, Claudia, is a woman of Sicilian heritage born in Libya during the 1940s, in the era of Italian colonization. During a road trip, her past flashes before her eyes with the vividness of a film: fifty years of life, choices, questions, emotions, setbacks, and rebirths. It is precisely this journey into her own self that makes the novel so well-suited to fans of mature romance—stories where love arrives not as comfortable a fairy tale, but as an unexpected possibility.

In summer, we crave stories that let us breathe—but also ‘feel’. “Ocean of Senses” succeeds because it blends memory, sensuality, introspection, and emotion. It does not rely on cheap erotica; instead, it explores the senses in their deepest sense—as an awakening, a connection, a longing to feel alive again, and a need to listen to one’s body and heart after years of unresolved questions.

For lovers of summer romance, this book offers a precious quality: it speaks not only of love taking root but of love that can reignite a woman, surprise her, and compel her to see herself with fresh eyes. Claudia is no naive protagonist. She carries a complex past, a powerful personal history, and a maturity that lends authenticity to every emotion.

“Ocean of Senses” by Maria Teresa De Donato is, therefore, the ideal book for anyone seeking a summer romance that breaks the mold—one that is deeper, more sensual, and more mature. A book to choose when you want a story that blends heart, memory, and desire—leaving you with the feeling of having lived through not just a romance, but an entire life.

A romance for those who don’t just want to dream of love, but to feel it wash over them like a wave: sudden, intense, essential.

Coaching and Career Guidance (Part Two) - The Differences

Coaching and Career Guidance:

Two Approaches, One Common Goal

(Part Two)

The Differences Between Coaching and Carrier Guidance:

Two Complementary Perspectives

In Part One, Valeria Gatti and I examined the roles of the Coach and the Career Counselor. We provided an overview of their respective activities and competencies.

In this article, we aim to delve deeper into specific aspects to better clarify the differences between these two professional figures—and, consequently, their methods and spheres of action.

MTDD: Valeria, let’s begin by examining the differences in origin, context, and initial purpose between the two roles.

VG: Certainly. Coaching started in the English-speaking world to improve athletes’ results. Later, it was used in companies to boost employee performance. Career guidance, however, emerged to help with professional integration, especially during transitions such as finishing studies, choosing a career path, starting a new job, or dealing with job loss.

MTDD: Some might wonder whether there are truly any differences between the two. How would we respond to clear up any doubts?

VG: We would respond by stating that Coaching and Guidance originated to address different needs. Coaching came from Gallwey’s insights in sports, then in business. Guidance was designed to foster professional integration. These different origins led to different methodological emphases. Coaching focuses on Socratic questioning and powerful questions. Guidance emphasizes specialized information and consultation. Today, both disciplines share a holistic vision of the individual.

MTDD: Would you like to explain what commonalities, if any, exist between these two disciplines?

VG: Both approaches recognize that professional choices cannot be separated from an individual’s holistic well-being—and that this well-being is achieved only when the individual feels a sense of fulfillment. Both take into account personal values, relationships, and the context in which individuals live, with the aim of fostering the realization of human potential.

Both the coach and the career counselor guide the individual along a path of self-awareness, autonomy, and self-determination.

The distinction—where one exists—lies more in emphasis than in substance: the coach prioritizes a Socratic, facilitative process without providing specific labor-market information, whereas the career counselor complements this guidance with specialized informational expertise.

Nevertheless, in response to the many challenges our society presents, integrated approaches are becoming increasingly effective.

MTDD: To achieve success, it is fundamental that approaches be integrated—or “holistic,” so to speak—meaning they must take into account the multiple facets, diverse realities, needs, and potential that define each individual. A person’s success is, therefore, synonymous with their well-being, and it is precisely here that coaching and career guidance converge—specifically, in identifying and ensuring that the individual becomes fully aware—or acquires full awareness—of what their true values actually are, for it is only by building upon those values that they can attain success.

VG: Indeed, Maria Teresa. I couldn’t agree more. Values should be regarded as the common ground.

Coaching and career guidance share a fundamental objective: to foster an individual’s well-being through choices that are both authentic and sustainable over time.
Personal values are central to this interaction. When a person explores what matters most to them, they find their foundations. This involves both coaching (to discover their inner compass) and career guidance (to identify criteria for career and educational choices).

Within this shared space, the following points emerge:

• Discovering one’s talents and aspirations (and how to project them into the future) is a process in which coaching and professional guidance merge;

• Self-determination is both a core principle of coaching and the ultimate goal of career guidance: empowering the individual to make choices in alignment with their own principles.

• Self-awareness is attained through a combination of inner exploration and an understanding of the external context;

• Agency represents the alignment between one’s personal vision and concrete possibilities;

• Intrinsic motivation is the natural outcome of processes in which personal values are reflected in one’s choices.

MTDD: When these elements are held in balance, the individual can begin to experience a state of integrated professional well-being—one in which their inner world and their external reality mutually reinforce one another. In fact, coaching and career guidance should never be viewed as being in opposition or as mutually exclusive alternatives; rather, they should be seen as complementary approaches that ought to be integrated, as each complements the other—thereby significantly increasing the likelihood of success.

VG: Exactly. When combined, coaching and career guidance create a better pathway. Rigid methods are not the answer. It is about blending both approaches while always keeping the individual as the focus.

Within this integrated framework, the individual is able to:

Find a safe space where they are listened to without judgment;

Develop clarity about their resources, aptitudes, and values. Also, recognize how these can become marketable skills, or identify ways to develop them through training, certification, or validation.

Deepen awareness of their "professional self." Also, access current information on professions, industries, and opportunities.

Manage changes and transitions with support for emotions and motivation. Also, learn practical strategies for job searching or choosing training to reach their goals.

Create a vision for their future. This vision must be authentic, grounded in core values; realistic, based on their context; and sustainable.

Define their own professional objectives. Then, turn these into tangible results, such as a CV, portfolio, LinkedIn profile, or interview prep. These tools communicate their unique value.

From a motivational standpoint, the individual discovers that exploring their personal values is not an action distinct from exploring concrete opportunities; rather, these are two facets of the same decision-making process. Inner self-awareness fuels strategic choices, while an understanding of the external context gives tangible form to one's aspirations.

In terms of effectiveness, this integrated approach yields more robust decisions by ensuring balanced alignment across the fundamental pillars of the individual.

MTDD: Let’s now explain how the integrated approach supports professional well-being.

VG: The integrated approach supports professional well-being in the following ways:

1.     By helping the individual develop a deep understanding of themselves

In the context of integrated guidance, the coachee explores their core values—what truly matters to them—while simultaneously analyzing their technical and soft skills using structured tools. They recognize their natural strengths while gaining a concrete understanding of their actual positioning within the job market. They identify the behavioral patterns that either hold them back or motivate them, and discover their specific learning style and aptitudes. There is no separation between discovering "who I am" and understanding "what I can offer": these are two sides of the same self-awareness.

2.     By supporting the individual in making authentic and sustainable decisions

The coachee learns to recognize emotions and the influence of intuition on choices. In parallel, they collect fresh information about the market and professional opportunities. They match their decisions to their personal values and vision, yet weigh options carefully. Choices become stronger when authenticity and practical awareness are combined.

3.     The coachee learns to navigate the professional world with awareness and effectiveness

They develop resilience to face market changes and build confidence in their own adaptability, while simultaneously acquiring concrete, effective job-search strategies. They maintain focus and motivation even in the face of obstacles, while learning to communicate their value clearly and persuasively through their CV, LinkedIn profile, and job interviews. They build a meaningful professional network grounded in a clear awareness of who they are, where they want to go, and why they are the best fit for that specific field or profession. As we have seen, these two processes originated to address distinct needs that were clearly differentiated in the past. Today, however, the boundaries of our needs have shifted; they are far less distinct than they used to be. Today, they serve as a tool that is not merely valid but truly invaluable for understanding who we are, where we aspire to go in life, and which path is best suited to lead us toward success. As we have discussed, achieving this requires taking into account not only any academic degrees or professional certifications we may already hold—or may need to acquire—but also the experiences and competencies we have cultivated, and, above all, our true values and the immense human potential within us—potential of which we must gain full awareness in order to attain the success we truly deserve.
