Alternative Health care Systems: The German New Medicine (GNM)

In my March 21st,  2014 and January 4th, 2015 articles we have considered respectively Herbal Medicine (http://holistic-coaching-dedonato.blogspot.com/2014/03/wisdom-from-past-journey-intoherbal.html) and Homeopathy (http://holistic-coaching-dedonato.blogspot.com/2015/01/alternative-health-systems-homeopathy.html), which are two major health care systems.
In this article we are going to take a look at the pretty unique, yet quite controversial New
German Medicine (NGM) of Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer.

As a Traditional Naturopath and Classical Homeopath having a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to life and health, I believe there are a few main points in the NGM that are worth exploring since they might contain some deep truths that could help us to better understand the dynamics of symptoms, disease (especially cancer),  and, consequently, of the healing process.

The Five Biological Laws identified by Dr. R. G. Hamer, in fact, along with his understanding that each kind of cancer is the result of a specific type of trauma that manifests psychologically and biologically in a specific area of the brain that controls that kind of cancer is not only fascinating but also makes much sense when confronting typology of cancer, area where it manifests, and the kind of trauma as the root cause that might have determined it.  Although not denying that many debilitating and degenerative diseases may be caused by environmental pollution or other factors, Dr. Hamer maintains that each cancer is the consequence of a specific trauma or ‘conflict shock’.

During the years that he practiced medicine, and after having experienced cancer himself, Dr. Hamer was able to come up with a pretty detailed classification through which he identified the kind of conflict shock each cancer is related to and the exact area where each kind manifests accordingly.  He was able to accomplish that by scanning the brain of each patient of his affected by cancer and by checking which area of the brain was linked to what kind of cancer affecting a specific area where the disease showed up.
His findings can be summarized as follows:

1)        Glandular Breast Cancer – Nest-Worry Conflict
            2)         Colon Cancer – Indigestible Morsel Conflict
            3)         Lung Cancer – Death-Fright Conflict
            4)         Kidney Cancer – Abandonment Conflict
            5)         Intraductal  Breast Cancer – Separation Conflict
            6)         Cervical Cancer – Female Sexual Conflict
            7)         Ovarian Cancer/Testicular Cancer – Profound Loss Conflict
            8)         Bone Cancer – Self-Devaluation Conflict
9)                  Prostate Cancer – Male Sexual Conflict

Quite interesting is that according to this theory

a)      when cancer manifests the healing process has already started and

b)      the more traumatic the conflict shock is at the beginning when the individual is unexpectedly confronted with an experience he/she is not prepared for the more aggressive the manifestation of the cancer will be.

As consequence of point b) it is highly recommended, as soon as the individual becomes aware of the level of shock they went through and the consequent insurgence of the cancer, that they work the best they can as to downgrade the level of shock they went through initially in order to limit as much as they can the consequent impact of cancer on their health and make the healing process easier.  It goes without saying that in this regard GNM sees, therefore, treatments such as chemo- and radiotherapy as interfering with the natural healing process.

As for the Five Biological Laws which constitute the core of GNM theory, they can be summarized as follows:

1)         The First biological law - also defined as DHS (Dirk Hamer Syndrome), after Dr. Hamer’s son Dirk who died after being shot in 1978 and whose death led Dr. Hamer himself to get cancer - states that every kind of cancer or cancer-like disease is caused by a trauma as consequence of an event the individual could not anticipate and was not prepared for.  This first biological law is articulated on three criteria:

Ø      Every Significant Biological Special Program (SBS) originates from a  Dirk Hamer’s Syndrome (DHS), which is an unexpected, highly acute, and isolating conflict shock that occurs simultaneously in the psyche, the brain, and on the corresponding organ;

Ø      The conflict content determines the location of the Hypothalamic Hamartoma (HH) in the brain and where exactly on the organ level the related Significant Biological Special Program (SBS) will run its course;

Ø      Every Significant Biological Special Program (SBS) runs synchronously on the level of the psyche, the brain, and the organ;

2)         The Second biological law, according to which each cancer or cancer-like disease articulates in two phases:

            a)         The first phase, called ‘active conflict phase’ in which the sympathetic nervous system dominates and is characterized by cold skin and extremities, stress, weight loss and sleep disorders.  Once the person overcomes this phase he or she enters the so called ‘post-resolution healing phase’ in which the parasympathetic nervous system dominates, and which to the contrary is a warm state;

b)         The second phase is the one in which the individual encounters more risks due to the intensity of the shock experienced at an emotional level, so that basically the rule is that the more intense the trauma was at a psychological level the more dramatic the manifestation of the symptoms will be during the healing phase.  This implies that as soon as one is faced with a conflict shock he or she should try either to solve the problem as fast as possible or at least to do his or her best to downgrade it in order to limit the impact of the disease on his or her health during the healing phase (that is when cancer manifests);

3)         The Third biological law, also called the Ontogenetic System of Cancer and Cancer-Equivalents, highlights that the progression of the disease is controlled primarily by the brain, either by the ‘old brain’, which includes brain stem and cerebellum, or by the ‘new brain’, or cerebrum, with the old brain controlling survival functions such as breathing, eating and reproduction, and the new brain managing more elaborated ones as personal and social issues and conflicts;

4)         The Fourth biological law – defined the Ontogenetic System of Microbes – sees
microbes as being not the cause of diseases but rather as helpers for they are used by the
body, and coordinated by the brain, to facilitate the healing process, assuming that the
necessary microbes are available at the time they are needed;

5)         The Fifth biological law, or the Quintessence, states that the conflict active phase
and the healing phase of the disease prove to be ‘special meaningful programs of nature’
which include the intervention of bacteria, fungi, and viruses.

In conclusion we need to acknowledge that the GNM has several merits. It has been able to eventually find the link among typologies of cancer, traumas that cause it and the related area(s) where the disease manifests; it has understood the dynamic of cancer itself, the reason for its aggressive manifestation and the importance to downgrade the psychological and mental anguish and shock that might have accompanied it from start in order to favorite and speed up the healing process. By identifying the Five Biological Laws regulating the whole process, GNM has helped, in my view, the medical field to move several steps forward in its understanding of the dynamics of this disease as well as to prepare potential victims to be better equipped to face it, cope with it, and eventually to
promote healing from within.

Although I recognize and appreciate the validity of this method, as a holistic practitioner
and action person I do feel that sometimes just staying still and looking at the manifestation of the disease and consequent expected natural healing to occur might not be enough but that some further help might be needed.  The latter could be in the form of healthier lifestyle and nutritional regimen, herbal or homeopathic remedies, emotional and spiritual coaching or a combination of them. This could not only facilitate healing from within but also play a major role in restoring optimum health.

Sistemi Medici Alternativi: La Nuova Medicina Germanica (GNM)

Dr.ssa Maria Teresa De Donato
Naturopata Tradizionale, Omeopata, Life Strategist, Autore

Sistemi Medici Alternativi: La Nuova Medicina Germanica (GNM)

1)       Cancro ghiandolare al seno – Conflitto legato alla preoccupazione concernente il proprio “nido”;

Cancro al colon – Conflitto del “boccone” indigesto, legato a problemi con familiari costretti a vivere sotto lo stesso tetto o nelle vicinanze;

Cancro al polmone – Conflitto legato al timore della morte;

Cancro al rene – Conflitto legato al senso di abbandono;

Cancro intraduttale al seno – Conflitto legato al timore di separazione;

Cancro cervicale – Conflitto sessuale femminile;

Cancro ovarico/testicolare – Conflitto legato al timore di una perdita profonda;

Cancro osseo – Conflitto legato all’autovalutazione;

Ø  Ogni Programma Biologico Speciale Significativo (SBS) ha origine da una DHS, che è inaspettata, molto acuta e da uno shock da conflitto isolante che avviene contemporaneamente nella psyche, nel cervello e nell’organo corrispondente;
Ø    Il contentuto del conflitto determina l’area dell’Amartoma ipotalamico (HH) nel cervello e dove esattamente a livello di organo il relativo Programma Biologico Speciale Significativo farà il suo corso;
Ø      Ogni Programma Biologico Speciale Significativo (SBS) si manifesterà contemporaneamente a livello di psiche, cervello ed organo;

a)      la prima fase, chiamata ‘fase attiva del conflitto’ in cui il sistema nervoso simpatico domina ed è carattrizzata da pelle ed estremità fredde, stress, perdita di peso e disordini del sonno. Una volta che la persona supera questa fase entra nella cosiddetta ‘fase di guarigione post-risoluzione’ in cui il sistema nervoso parasimpatico domina, che è, al contrario, uno stato caldo;
b)      la seconda fase è quella in cui l’individuo corre più rischi a causa dell’intensità dello shock provato a livello emotivo, cosicché di fatto, e secondo tale principio, quanto più intenso è il trauma vissuto a livello psicologico tanto più drammatica sarà la manifestazione dei sintomi durante la fase di guarigione. Questo implica che non appena una persona affronta uno shock da conflitto dovrebbe cercare di risolvere quanto prima il problema o quantomeno fare del proprio meglio per ridurlo al fine di limitare l’impatto della malattia sulla sua salute durante la fase di guarigione (ossia quando la malattia si manifesta);

3)                  La Terza Legge Biologica, chiamata anche Sistema Ontogenetico del Cancro e
Malattie Equivalenti al Cancro evidenzia il fatto che il progredire della malattia è controllato principalmente dal cervello, o per mezzo del ‘cervello antico’ o tramite il ‘cervello recente’ o cervello propriamente detto, con il cervello antico che controlla funzioni legate alla sopravvivenza, quali respirazione, alimentazione e riproduzione, ed il cervello recente che gestisce funzioni più elaborate, quali problemi personali e sociali e conflitti;

4)                  La Quarta Legge Biologica – definita Sistema Ontogenetico dei Microbi – vede i microbi non come causa delle malattie, ma piuttosto come ausili usati dal corpo e coordinati dal cervello per facilitare il processo di guarigione, supponendo che i necessari microbi siano disponibili nel momento del bisogno;

T: Grazie, sei molto gentile. Arvind.

1)      Essere Positivi, visualizzare se stessi nel mantenersi in salute, magri, attivi, etc. a prescindere da come si è al presente.  Il vostro sé interiore è il vostro vero medico e sa cosa fare per mantenervi in salute. Abbiate fiducia nel vostro se interiore e lasciate che lavori al fine di mantenervi in salute;
2)      Mantenetevi fisicamente attivi camminando, correndo, andando in bicicletta, nuotando, etc.;
3)      Mangiate moderatamente e cibi sani;
4)      Evitate dipendenze;

Anch’io ti faccio i migliori auguri.

Approaching Health with Love, Kindness and Compassion - Interview with Dr. Arvind Hirpara Patel -

Approaching Health with Love, Kindness and Compassion

-         Interview with Dr. Arvind Hirpara Patel  -

Allopathic Physician

In some of my previous articles, we have discussed some fundamental differences between allopathic/conventional/mainstream (western) medicine and holistic/natural/complementary/integrative medicine. We have also examined some specific holistic methodologies such as Homeopathy, Herbalism, and Reiki, and also focused on some major failures of conventional medicine.

Today it’s with my greatest pleasure and honor that I introduce you my dear friend and colleague Dr. Arvind Hirpara Patel.  Despite practicing allopathy, Dr. Patel seems to have a pretty holistic and even spiritual approach to life in general and health in particular.

T: Arvind, Thank you so much for taking the time for this interview. I really appreciate it.

Dr. Patel: Thanks to you as well Teresa. As such you are a gem. You are so vibrant, inspiring, highly intelligent and enlightened personality. It is really my pleasure that you are taking my interview.

T: Thank you, that’s very kind of you. Arvind, What led you to enroll in Medical School and become a physician?

Dr. Patel: Life in itself is a happening and my becoming a physician is a happening as well. Yes, there was an unexplained affinity to serve sufferers and poor, from the school days of my life and that led me to study Medicine.

T: I read some great comments about you and your loving and caring attitude towards your patients. They are really blessed to have you as their physician!
Generally speaking, the approach that the West and the East have towards Life in general and health in particular is quite different, with western medicine focusing on symptoms and disease as enemies to fight and destroy and eastern health care systems such as the Indian Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) – just to name the majors – being more patient-oriented and approaching health from a mind-body-spirit perspective, while seeing symptoms and disease as part of the body’s alarm system and its way to communicate with us. What is your personal understanding and consequent approach to health, symptoms, disease and healing?

Dr. Patel: Health is our basic state of being. Each and every person has the right to be healthy and is healthy in their true nature. Sometimes some physiological, psychological, environmental (including bacteria, virus, fungi etc, ), traumatic factors make us diseased. So disease is just a disturbed state of our health. Once that disturbance is taken care of, health is always there in its basic state. And that is probably healing for me.  Now in this world there is no medicine that basically has any power to heal our body. Healing is always being done by our body. If anybody does have a fracture then the doctor’s role is just to put and keep those broken bones together for some period of time so that the body can heal itself in proper alignment.  If a surgeon performs a bypass surgery on heart, the success of the bypass consists in the fact that he is only re-joining some arteries and then waits healing to take place on its own. A physician may prescribe some drugs to keep some bacteria or fungi away from the patient’s body, but actual healing is being done by the body itself. So our body in itself has an amazing healing system. I do my work with much respect towards this healing system inbuilt in each of us.

T: Although you do not practice Ayurveda but rather allopathic medicine do you believe that, due to your Indian cultural and spiritual heritage, Ayurveda might have, nonetheless, somehow influenced your vision, understanding and approach to health? And if yes, how and to what extent?

Dr. Patel: Yes, as an Indian, I always believe that our mind always rules over our body and that we are being constantly governed by our higher self or infinite intelligence. So, though some of Allopathic medicines have given us wonderful health benefit, we still are taking baby steps in curing a person as a whole. Here Ayurveda does have that vision of treating a person rather then the disease or symptom. I personally try to give my patients psychological guidance and emotional support and to make them know that Disease comes from within (though it looks coming from outside, in case of bacteria, virus, fungi etc.). So I recommend and encourage them to develop their inner strength, to be positive, to keep themselves physically active and mentally at peace.

T: As a physician, How would you personally describe health, and what suggestions
would you give to our readers as overall recommendations to maintain health for as
long as they can and to restore optimum health once problems arise?

Dr. Patel: For me being healthy is to be free of any disease of any kind and more to that be reasonably active both mentally and physically.  To maintain health I recommend few points as follow:

1) Be Positive, visualize yourself of keeping yourself healthy, slim, active etc. no matter what picture may be at this time. Your inner self is your real doctor and it does know what to do, to keep you healthy. Trust your inner self and let it work to keep you healthy;
2) Keep yourself physically active by walking, running, cycling, swimming, etc.;
3) Eat moderately and healthy food;
4) Avoid addictions;
5) Do meditation and relaxation exercises.

T: In your personal view and according to your own experience as an allopathic physician, which are some major areas in the medical field that do need to be reviewed and corrected and how can we accomplish that?

Dr. Patel: In my view, doctors need to be personally caring towards patients, going thoroughly in a patient’s personal wellbeing approach. Once we understand a person, we can better understand cause of a disease and so we can treat a patient very thoroughly but in this fast paced life neither doctor nor patient has that time so each and every one is in hurry to get/make so called ‘healthy’. Here a human approach to patient is very much needed.

T: As a medical professional living and working in India, have you noticed or are at least aware of some major differences and approaches to patient and to health existing between western and eastern allopathic physicians? And if yes, which ones?

Dr. Patel:  As such I have never worked with any western physician. So I cannot say anything about western physicians but we do treat the patient as a human and are very economical in our way of treating patients.

T: This has been quite an educational and informative interview, Arvind.  Thank you so much for your dedication and for being with us today. I wish you all the success you deserve in your profession.

Dr. Patel: Thank you to you too, Teresa. It has been a pleasure. I wish all the best to you too.

Miracles happening all around us: The River Road District Community of Eugene, OR is flourishing

Maria Teresa De Donato, Ph.D.,
Traditional Naturopath, Homeopath, Life Strategist, Author

Miracles happening all around us:

The River Road District Community of Eugene, OR is flourishing

It’s true: we are living in a quite challenging world. We have been witnessing the collapse of the monetary, financial and economic systems along with the trembling and sunset of our greatest democracies.  Millions of people have lost their jobs, their homes, and have been compelled to relocate to other countries; sometimes fleeing from their homeland and leaving behind all their belongings when not even their beloved ones for one reason or the other.

And yet, despite this quite devastating scenario, we have also been seeing plenty of miracles taking place in the world, all around us. Hundreds of millions have finally gone back to one major understanding of all times, hallmark of all ancient and native cultures and civilizations, that is, that we – humans, wildlife and environment – are strictly related and connected to each other. We aren’t but only one big family. We all come from the same Source and we all need each other. It’s not only a matter of pure survival. It’s a matter of living a Life worth to be called as such.

As consequence of this understanding, initiatives of all sorts are coming to life all aiming at helping individuals, when not even entire communities, to survive the inevitable crises we are all faced with, some way or the other. All these initiatives are based on the willingness, determination and joy of sharing, supporting and working together for the common good. One of these amazing initiatives is taking place right now in the River Road District of Eugene, Oregon where an initial project aiming at “working directly with mentally challenged kids in the form of teaching skills in a small bakery/restaurant” has notably extended to the point of including “support to community projects and gatherings, Elders’ food needs, and slow food development (urban gardens).” They now run also “a free lunch for Elders once a week and are planning a Community Garden to both support this project and create a place where kids and Elders can work together, share, learn, teach grow basic skills in urban gardening and permaculture.”

Michael Vasquez, a River Road District Community activist, organizer and foundraiser has summarized the mission of this project as follows:

“This program is a natural extension of activity that is happening in my neighborhood. We have connected to each other and formed a resource-sharing and Human relations that have just opened up into a larger inclusiveness. The focus of Reality Kitchen was initially to work with kids/people with mental challenges (reflected in their website), which began to extend to Elders and neighborhood “characters” and those in need of some kind of basic connection. The Elders’ Lunch was born from a Man who decidedly grew enough vegetables to support a large number of weekly meals...; Reality Kitchen owners stepped up and matched his efforts and the Elders’ Luncheon Was born from these people’s efforts. I was so inspired by this that I decided to carry it on as my dear friend needed to move along after 20 years of carrying this community support, a true community leader he is, and is now called to a new community to continue his work. So I am just trying to unify folks to carry on as I understand that it takes a community to support a community, thus my efforts to bring this to a Reality of sorts... .”

So now, you might all be kind of curious and wondering … “How has this community responded so far?”
And the answer is… “Wonderfully!” Everybody has been trying to help and fully support the whole project the best they could. A small used Greenhouse has been donated, which however still needs some TLC, new plastic for recovering, PVC, and some miscellaneous parts.  The Community has been blessed with enough volunteers of all ages and walks of life, all supporting the project and working together to make this dream come true.

In the meantime, the ongoing fundraising campaign aims at reaching at least $2,000 that will be needed for

-         Irrigation tape and fittings
-         Seed stock
-         Straw bales for raised beds (1st year garden, 2/3 of an acre)
-         Compost
-         Top soil
-         Greenhouse construction and parts

Whatever your ability and means…we are inviting you to join us in our efforts to make this Community’s dream a reality. If you live in the area, you will always be welcome to give the Community a helping hand. If you don’t or cannot physically join the many volunteers taking part to this project, please take into account the possibility to contribute to this great initiative through a donation. Whatever amount you are able to donate will be very much appreciated and help the project to keep moving forward.  It is also my hope that the “Idea”, though not a new one, will inspire folks to join together a create similar urban gardens, food forests and shared slow food neighborhood garden plots.

Miracoli stanno avvenendo tutt’intorno a noi:

Ora, dunque, voi tutti sarete curiosi e vi starete chiedendo…

Reiki Healing - Interview with Erin Travers - Reiki Master Teacher

Reiki Healing

-         Interview with Erin Travers  -

Reiki Master Teacher

There are several factors that distinguish natural/alternative/complementary medicine from conventional/mainstream/allopathic/western modern medicine.  In this article we are just going to mention the fact that contrary to mainstream medicine, all holistic methodologies take into account

a)      the mind, body and spirit components, this includes not only the physical body per se, but also the psychological, emotional, mental and spiritual characteristics of each individual at any given time and

b)   the role and importance that invisible factors – such as energy flow, energy stagnation and level of vibration – play in our health and wellness.

Although to some people this might sound as something theoretical and almost mystical, in reality it is very practical, objective, down-to-earth and scientific.  As a matter of fact, in the last few decades and even more so in the last relatively few years, through some breakthroughs in different disciplines such as Quantum Physics and Biology, Science has been able to better understand and give an explanation to phenomena that have always been known by ancient and native civilizations.  The latter, despite not being able to fully comprehend the dynamics, reasons and physical laws behind these phenomena, accepted them, nonetheless, as realities, as the manifestation of something Higher than them, not visible and whose activity and power would, consequently, be shown during  ceremonial rituals they employed for both spiritual and physical purification and healing purposes.

In recent times, therefore, millions of people in our western world have approached, used or even become practitioners of holistic methodologies which specifically focus on the use of energy: among the latter, we find vibrational medicine, chakra and aura cleansing, Kundalini activation and Reiki healing.

Today, it is with great pleasure that I am going to introduce you Erin Travers, a Reiki Master Teacher, who has been practicing this method for some 25 years in beautiful New Zealand.

T: Welcome Erin, and thank you so much for being with us today.

E: Thank you so much for inviting me, Teresa

T: Erin, why don’t you start with introducing yourself to our readers and explaining a little bit about your personal and professional experiences and how and why you approached Reiki?

E:  I have always had an interest in natural health, alternative medicine, and folk remedies.
I’ve had a fascination for stones and crystals forever and used herbs from very young. In 1992, with a young child and new 6 months old I was feeling very post natal, after having a delivery that was somewhat traumatic on my physical body. I had some very painful scarring that had healed quickly but left me with very sensitive scar tissue that made life extremely difficult. I had a couple of friends who recommended that I go for some healing and sent me to a wonderful little healing centre that offered an array of healing modalities.
I met a woman there who had the most beautiful energy about her and she gave me a Reiki healing treatment and told me I should follow up with two more a week apart. The Reiki session was incredible and I felt an incredible warmth which I later learnt was the energy transfer going on. A few days later, between my first and second visit, I discovered that the scarring had gone! Now without going into gory details, I want to emphasise the fact that this scarring was very painful, very debilitating, and had not undergone any changes since a few weeks after delivery.
And in the space of a couple of days it had vanished! No sign of it at all. I pretty much skipped into the healing centre to see her for my next visit and jumped for joy, declaring “I have to learn how to do this to give this out to the world!”  and so I did.

T: That must certainly have been an amazing experience. Thank you for sharing it with us. Erin, how can we define Reiki?

E: Reiki is a particular style of energy healing that originates from Japan, discovered by a man called Mikao Usui. Reiki is usually described as a life-force energy that can be guided spiritually. The practitioner acts as a channel for the energy, rather than the energy coming ‘from’ the practitioner. Because of this the act of giving reiki to someone does not deplete our own energy as is the case in some other modalities.
Reiki will send healing to the areas of your mind, body, or spirit that needs it. It will only work for your highest good, and is completely non-invasive. It will complement any other treatment going on as well, whether it’s surgical, medicinal or physical therapy of some sort, and of course it works beautifully with other natural health practices.

T: Could you walk us through one of your Reiki sessions so that those who are not familiar with it might have a better idea of what Reiki really consists of?

E: I usually have a chat to my clients to understand how they have come to me that day, and if there are any health concerns in particular. I explain what happens during a session and ask them to lie comfortably on the treatment bed. I have dim lighting and soft music playing… it’s a very soothing relaxing atmosphere. My client lies on the bed fully clothed, only removing shoes and outer layers as they wish (jackets or jumpers).
I start at the head end usually and holding my hands just above their body, or resting gently on the skin, I follow a pattern of hand positions covering the main chakras but also other parts as my intuition tells me. The client may simply feel a warm sensation or they feel pleasant tingles, strong magnetic energy or even see colours. Some people like to chat a little throughout the session, this is often the case when they’re carrying emotional hurt – getting things off their chest is very beneficial and of course confidentiality is paramount. I have had very emotional clients at times, I simply let them talk, cry, express whatever they want. I give them tissues and quietly continue. The healing energy helps them release what they need to and every single one has said how much better they felt after. The common descriptions of a session are of deeply relaxing, a sense of release (of tensions, worries, nervousness…), and feeling refreshed afterwards. Some who have physical concerns will feel ease straight away but if the condition is chronic it can take a while longer to relieve.
I feel the energy too, in my hands. I allow myself to be guided to the areas of theirs which need the healing, but by following the chakras those energy wheels are cleansed and refreshed which enables the body to heal itself. Homeostasis is the natural state of our body - it is the imbalance that causes illness and injury: dis-ease.
I will discuss the energy I feel, letting the client know. However, I always emphasise that I do not diagnose. For instance, a lot of energy going on in the lower abdomen of a young woman could indicate gastrointestinal issues, or perhaps she is pregnant? Or menstruating? However she could simply still be digesting lunch. If I were to suggest a condition it could play on the mind of the client and cause stress – that is in direct opposition to the aim of a healing session.
Each Reiki Practitioner has their own particular method of doing things; we each bring something of ourselves to our practice. I like to finish my session with an aura cleanse. This is where I ‘scrub’ the aura with piece of rainbow fluorite to clear away the psychic clutter that we collect as we go through our day. The reiki session in itself does cleanse the whole being but this is an extra touch to wind up. I do this using my hands several inches above their body – not touching at all. Some of my clients have sensed the movement even though they are lying with eyes shut, perhaps facing down at this point.

T: Very interesting. Thank you for this quite detailed description of your sessions. Erin, If Reiki uses the Cosmic Energy that is all around us, outside and inside all that is, and which is usually called Qi, Chi, Prana, Life Force, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to refer to it as Qi (Chi, Prana, Life Force) Energy and Reiki Method rather than to Reiki Energy as we often hear? What is your personal opinion on the matter?

E: Personally, I think these words are our human labels for a phenomenon that is apparent worldwide. There are many words for the sun in many different languages, but they all refer to the some bright light in the sky.
I think energy is universal and transcends language, culture, and human rules. The healing energy of the universe doesn’t mind which particular practice we learn or teach. It doesn’t mind what language we use. A name is simply a label. The name indicates more of the method of teaching, and the human path through our learning that brings us to where we are at the present point. I prefer to call my work simply Reiki. I am a Reiki practitioner and that’s what I teach. As I mentioned earlier, we all bring something personal to our practice. Individuals will add their touch to Reiki, or whatever their modality is. But the energy that flows is simply pure energy. I simply act as a conduit or channel to enable the client to receive it.

T: That’s truly beautifully explained! Thank you. Erin, some people who are not familiar with how energy flow works, let alone with Reiki, might object that these kinds of hands-on practices might involve some sort of “channeling”, this implying that the practitioner becomes an instrument in the hands of spiritual entities. How would you respond to such an objection?

E: I reassure my clients that Reiki is a pure healing method; Reiki only works for your highest good. Describing myself as a ‘hollow reed’ is a phrase I picked up from one of my teachers. She is a gentle soul and these words really felt right – they seem to feel right to my clients too. Explaining that the energy is all around, and that I simply help ‘connect’ them to it reassures them that I am not ‘pushing’ anything onto them. I also remind them that their own brain has the power to shut out anything they don’t wish to receive.

T: This might reassure those readers who are not familiar with the dynamics of energy. Do you personally believe that, when it comes to this energy emanating from our hands… we all, as human beings, are provided with and potentially able to use it or that only some of us are gifted with it, hence able to really employ this energy in order to help people who are ill to benefit from it?

E: I do think that in some ways this energy is available to all of us. However, I also think that to be able to connect to this energy, to be receptive – we need to be vibrating at a higher level than humans usually do. I think ego has got in the way for most. Anger, jealousy, greed, selfishness… these are all emotions humans seem quite attached to but these are the things that hold them down. By living in harmony with your environment you will naturally raise your vibration and sense these higher energies. Those who choose to actively learn will raise it too.

T: Do you think that there are locations, countries, areas on this planet that facilitate energy flow, hence this kind of practices such as Reiki or not?  What is your personal understanding of this specific aspect?

E: Oh Absolutely! There are patterns to energy and vibrations. And of course this beautiful earth we live on is made up of amazing rocks and crystals all of which have their own energy vibration. Throughout history (and longer) mankind has felt drawn to certain areas where the energy feels a certain way, and have used these energies, and these particular sites.

T: In the introduction to our interview, I also mentioned vibrational medicine, chakra and aura cleansing and Kundalini activation. Does Reiki somehow relate to them or not? And if yes, how and to what extent?

E: Our bodies are made up of atoms holding together by vibrating… it’s the precise vibration that we give off, and are drawn to that creates good healthy balances – or the not-so-good imbalances that cause illness. Reiki is a powerful and yet gentle method of using energy to heal. Reiki helps maintain our energetic self and keep those energy wheels moving well. Reiki is one of many methods of energy work; it’s incredibly simple in its practice and is also incredibly effective. I think it feels quite ‘pure’ due to its simplicity.
I practice self-Reiki every day. That self-care has carried me through some challenging times mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Reiki has the ability to balance your chakras, flood an area of imbalance with healing, release past trauma, and clear and strengthen your aura to protect you from outside negative energies.

T: Thank you so much for having taken the time to be with us today, Erin. This was quite an informative interview about how Reiki works and how people can benefit from it for their optimum health and wellness. I invite all the readers to get back to us and let us know how we can further help in this regard. What if some of our readers wished to contact you for further information or even to schedule a session with you?  Do they need to live in your area or session can take place also online regardless the location? How can they reach you?

E: Reiki can transcend time and space, I am able to send healing energy from my home across the world – I have done frequently when my children are overseas. Currently I tend to do healing sessions in Palmerston North New Zealand, I prefer to physically meet my clients, although I am considering opening up to internet work. I only teach reiki face to face, as I have been taught that way and feel strongly that to learn Reiki best it should be in person with a teacher.  I can be reached by email on Reiki_with_Erin@xtra.co.nz  or on my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Reiki-with-Erin - and will be happy to discuss anything further.

T: Again, it was a pleasure having you here, Erin.

E: Thank you, Teresa, for inviting me….
